After they were taken away, only the southern kingdom of "Judah" remained, with their capital at Jerusalem.

Many believe that the Ark was safely hidden by its Levite (see Levites) caretakers somewhere in or near Jerusalem just prior to the Babylonian captivity, and that it will one day be found by archaeologists - a number of whom are today actively seeking it (see Temple Mount Treasures).
