Biblical references to alcohol abuse could just as easily apply to all of the other sorts of drugs that are found in the world today - if the substance itself doesn't destroy its victim, the warped behavior that it causes will. The greatest tragedy of the fraudulent term "getting high" is that substance abuse doesn't get people high, it gets them low - as low as the grave.
The Bible also makes plain that "getting high" doesn't just destroy one's immediate life, it can cause ruin for far longer, infinitely longer. A few points to consider -
"Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, Idolatry, enmities, Sorcery, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit The Kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21)
"Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise." (Proverbs 20:1)
"A man who wanders from the way of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead. He who loves pleasure will become a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not become rich." (Proverbs 21:16-17)
"Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." (Luke 21:34-36)
"The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the Armor Of Light. Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts." (Romans 13:12-14)
