"Yet Without Sin"

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before Him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do. Since then we have a great High Priest [see The Day Of Atonement] Who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God [see The Logos], let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one Who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:12-15 RSV)

Temptation Of Christ There is absolutely no doubt that Jesus Christ never sinned. But, some have wondered if He could He have sinned. After all, He was a normal (see What Did Jesus Look Like?) flesh and blood human - the gory brutality inflicted upon Him at His crucifixion is undeniable proof of that (see The Fateful Night and How Did Jesus Christ Die?).

The verses in the opening paragraph, while stating clearly that Jesus never sinned, also say that He can "sympathize with our weaknesses" and "in every respect has been tempted as we are." Can someone be tempted to do something that's impossible for them to do?

The "temptation of Christ" was not a farce - it was for real. Satan didn't try to get Jesus to sin because he knew that it wasn't possible, but because he knew that it was possible. The Messiah was tempted, truly tempted, but did not sin. He did for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

Fact Finder: During the "temptation of Christ," did Satan, in an attempt to misuse them for his own evil purposes, actually quote verses from the Psalms to Jesus Christ?
Matthew 4:6, Psalm 91:11-12
