Charismata

Spiritual gifts, from the New Testament Greek word charismata (the modern, often non-religious expressions charisma and charismatic have the same origin), were, and are, various abilities given, through the Holy Spirit, to certain of God's servants. The abilities were never provided to personally exalt the servant, but were intended as the means to enable more effective service. Spiritual gifts included teaching, Prophecy, Speaking In Tongues (i.e. other languages, so that the Gospel could be proclaimed to all nations), miracles, healing, and assisting those in need. While some spiritual gifts were more powerful and publicly recognized, the various gifts were not some sort of ranking system, but were likened to various parts of a single body.
