Gallio

Marcus Annaeus Novatus, the older brother of the famous statesman and philosopher Seneca, was born in Cordova, Spain. He changed his name to Junius Annaeus Gallio after he was adopted by Lucius Junius Gallio, a wealthy Roman citizen (see Ancient Empires - Rome). Gallio became a teacher and political functionary for the Emperor Nero, and is best known to Bible History as the Roman proconsul of Achaia when the apostle Paul was involved in a dispute at Corinth.

Gallio By most accounts, Gallio was a even-tempered man of integrity, at least relatively speaking, unlike the demented emperor that he served, a man who thought little of having his own mother killed. When Gallio and Seneca were accused of being involved in a plot against Nero about 65 AD, both brothers were forced to kill themselves, 3 years before the 31 year old Nero himself committed suicide.

Paul Before Gallio

The events surrounding Paul's appearance before Gallio very well illustrates how early Christianity was a not a struggle of Jews against Christians, or Romans against Christians, but of Jews against Jews, a "controversy" that Gallio refused to become involved in.
