Where Is Your Soul?

The English word soul is used to translate two original words of the Old Testament and New Testament. The Hebrew word pronounced nay-fesh, which literally means a breathing creature, is variously translated as soul, life, person, mind, heart, creature, body, himself, yourselves, dead, will, desire, man, themselves and appetite. The Greek word pronounced psoo-kay, which literally means life's breath or breathing, is variously translated as soul, life, mind and heart. According to the Holy Scriptures, a soul is a living, breathing creature that eventually dies. Nowhere in The Bible can be found an immortal soul (see What Happens When You Die?).

"then The Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being [KJV living soul]." (Genesis 2:7 RSV)

"Did not He Who made me in the womb make him?" (Job 31:15 RSV)

"For Thou didst form my inward parts, Thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139:13 RSV)

Are Spirit And Soul Separate?

"May the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23 RSV)

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12 RSV)

Can Souls Die?

"Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine: the soul that sins shall die." (Ezekiel 18:4 RSV)

"The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself." (Ezekiel 18:20 RSV)

"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28 RSV)

"For Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let Thy Holy One see corruption." (Acts 2:27 RSV)

"And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people." (Acts 3:23 RSV)

"let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death." (James 5:20 RSV)
